| Why
giclée? What is a giclée print?
Acorn Studios sells only
giclée prints of our original artwork, made using archival quality
pigment inks and paper. Giclée prints, an alternative to the
time-consuming and expensive traditional four-color process, were developed
in the 1990's. The name was coined by printmaker Jack Duganne, who used the
French "jet d'encre" (inkjet), "gicleur" (nozzle), and "gicler" (to spray
or spurt) to create the feminine noun "giclée" (pronounced
zhee-cley), describing how the fine droplets of ink are distributed
onto the printing medium.
The fine-art prints produced
using this technique are durable, colorfast, affordable, and nearly
indistinguishable from the original artwork, with the result that giclées
are now found in museums, art and photographic galleries around the world.
For optimum print longevity,
we recommend that you treat your giclée print the same as you would
other original art prints. It should be protected from water, and should
not be placed in direct sunlight. Ideally, your print should be framed behind
glass.
