We exist to make available
meaningful, high-quality artwork in a culture where the cheap, the ephemeral,
and the expedient too often dominate. Most of the quotations used in
our artwork are from classic works, and many are from the Bible, which we
view as the ultimate source of truth.
Our name
was inspired both by
the workshops of medieval manuscript illuminators, and by Lady Julian of
Norwich, a fourteenth-century recluse who was the recipient of sixteen
"shewings," or visions, which vividly described God's divine love. In one
of these visions, she relates that
"...and in this he shewed
a little thing, the quantitie of an haselnott, lying in the palme of my hand,
...and it was as rounde as a ball. I looked thereon with the eye of my
understanding, and thought: What may this be? And it was answered generaelly
thus: It is all that is made. I marvayled how it might laste, for me thought
it might sodenly have fallen to nawght for littlenes. And I was answered
in my understanding: It lasteth and ever shall, for God loveth it; and so
hath all thing being by the love of God."
We concur with Lady Julian
that all Creation pales in comparison with the uncreated God, and seek in
our work to bring Him glory, as well as to bring to you "nothing...that you
do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful" (William Morris).
About the
artist
The natural world has
always been a subject ripe for interpretation to me. A native Oregonian,
I enjoy long hikes in the woods and learning names of trees and flowers,
many of which find their way into my art.
This business was brought
into being by the steady drip of friends, relatives, and ultimately a husband
urging me to share my artwork with the world - rather like the formation
of a stalagmite. My work is influenced by the rich history of art, from
illuminated manuscripts to Uccello, Fra Angelico, Schongauer, Matisse, Klee,
Klimt, and others. It is one of the ways God has given me to express what
He has put in me.
I hope that you will
discover in my work both beauty and meaning. Your comments are appreciated:
